"Whistle-blowing" occurs when an employee reports a law-breaking employer to a government or
law-enforcement agency outside the company. Whistle-blowing is protected by law, and employer
retaliation in such cases is illegal. Also, it is not necessary that the employer actually
broke a law. It is enough for the employee to have had a good-faith belief that an illegality
existed in the workplace.
